Google Consent Mode

Helping Google services respect visitor consent choices.

What is Google Consent Mode?

Google Consent Mode is a feature that allows Google services, including Google Analytics and Google Ads, to adjust how they operate based on a visitor's consent preferences.

Rather than collecting information immediately when a visitor arrives, Google Consent Mode works with a Consent Management Platform (CMP) to determine whether analytics, advertising, and other Google technologies should be enabled based on the visitor's choices.

Google introduced Consent Mode to help businesses better align Google's services with evolving privacy expectations and consent requirements.

How does Google Consent Mode work?

Google Consent Mode communicates a visitor's consent choices to supported Google services.

Depending on those choices, Google technologies may:

• Operate normally after consent has been granted.
• Limit or prevent data collection when consent is denied.
• Adjust how measurement and advertising features function.

Google Consent Mode does not replace a Consent Management Platform. Instead, it works alongside one to help Google services respond appropriately to visitor preferences.

Do I still need a Consent Management Platform?

Yes.

Google Consent Mode communicates consent decisions, but it does not collect consent from visitors.

A Consent Management Platform is responsible for:

Displaying a consent banner.
Allowing visitors to manage their preferences.
Recording consent decisions.
Blocking supported technologies until consent has been obtained, when configured to do so.

Together, a CMP and Google Consent Mode provide a more complete approach to managing visitor consent.

Why is Google Consent Mode important?

As website privacy requirements continue to evolve, many businesses are reviewing how Google Analytics, Google Ads, and other Google services operate on their websites.

Google Consent Mode helps businesses:

• Respect visitor consent preferences.
• Improve compatibility with supported Google services.
• Better manage analytics and advertising technologies.
• Support modern website privacy practices.

Whether Google Consent Mode is appropriate depends on your website, the technologies you use, and the privacy laws that may apply to your business.

Does Google Consent Mode affect Google Analytics?

Yes.

Google Analytics can work with Google Consent Mode to adjust how analytics data is collected based on a visitor's consent preferences.

Many organizations implement Google Consent Mode alongside Google Analytics and a Consent Management Platform to better manage visitor consent while continuing to measure website performance.

What does this mean for your website?

The technologies your website needs depend on your business goals.

Some organizations may only use basic analytics. Others rely on advertising platforms, appointment scheduling, live chat, embedded videos, or customer communication tools.

The key is understanding what each technology does, what information it collects, and how it fits into your overall privacy strategy.
