The story of
One Eleven Web Design's 1960 VW bus

Every good surf story starts with a little rust and a whole lot of character. Our 1960 VW Panel Bus—now the flagship of our fleet—has lived more lives than most vehicles dream of.

It all began in Tucson, Arizona, where it rolled off the lot in classic Dove Blue and went to work for Bob Brickman of Brickman Dry Cleaners, located on the corner of 6th Street and 7th Avenue. Before heading west, Bob was a well-known sports promoter in Cleveland, best known for promoting the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Jimmy Doyle boxing match. When he settled in Arizona, the little VW became bus #7 in his commercial fleet and was repainted white, sporting Brickman’s business logo.

Years later, the bus was retired, its nose chopped off, and it was repurposed as a kid’s playhouse—until John Ghia of California BusBoyz rescued it from obscurity. Back in East L.A., John drilled out thousands of spot welds and grafted on a front end from a 1958 Single Cab, giving the bus a second chance at life.

From there, it made its way to legendary surfboard designer Dale Walker in Orange County, CA. The bus spent its days cruising up and down Highway 1, surfboards hanging out the back. And here’s the wild part—our tagline has always been “Go out and surf the web…” We had no idea this little bus had already been living the dream.

Now it’s #1 in our fleet.

Today, this vintage VW is getting some modern upgrades: an adjustable front beam, Porsche 944 spindles and brakes, and Fuchs wheels. We’ve teamed up with Harrison Auto Electric to restore the electrical system and install a new motor. Our friends at Hi-Fi USA are adding external vehicle cameras and heated seats, because let’s face it—Northern California mornings are no joke.

We’re also threw on some Safari Windows from Wolfgang International in Redding, California to keep that wind-in-your-face vibe alive. And thanks to a few expert bodywork tips from Bryan at Bruce’s Body Shop in Stockton, we’re finally making progress on straightening it all out.

It’s a long road, but we’re not in a hurry. This bus, like our business, was built on stories, relationships, and a whole lot of elbow grease. With the help of our customers and friends, we’ll finish it—and then take it on the road where it belongs.
